The State-City workgroup, established by Governor Wes Moore, met to discuss consultant’s findings and collaborate on next steps

BALTIMORE, MD (September 22) –The future of State Center took another step forward last night as representatives from 15 city and state agencies convened in Baltimore to present the vision plan for ongoing redevelopment of State Center.

This marked the fourth meeting of the State-City workgroup established by Governor Moore to ensure alignment with broader planning efforts in Baltimore and leverage collective resources during the redevelopment project, which is jointly led by the Department of General Services, the Maryland Economic Development Corporation (MEDCO), and the Maryland Department of Transportation.

This meeting provided an opportunity to present the vision plan for redevelopment after months of research and due diligence by the consulting partner, Redgate Real Estate Advisors. A key focus is leveraging the site’s significant transit assets to support transit-oriented development and better connect future housing, jobs and community amenities to Metro, Light Rail, Baltimore Penn Station and bus service.

“State Center presents a once-in-a-generation opportunity to help shape the future of Baltimore and create a place that reflects the strength, diversity and aspirations of this community,” said Maryland Department of General Services Secretary Atif Chaudhry. “Our goal is not simply to redevelop a site, but to help create a vibrant destination that connects people to jobs, housing, transportation and opportunity while contributing to the continued revitalization of Baltimore. By working closely with our city partners and, most importantly, listening to the community, we can build a shared vision for State Center that delivers lasting value for Baltimore and for generations of Marylanders to come.”

Community engagement will be the next key step in the process. On October 13, the redevelopment team and Agency leadership will meet with State Center neighbors for a second community meeting to share findings, answer questions, and provide an update on the vision and path forward.

The continued collaboration among state and city agencies, combined with direct engagement with the surrounding community, is intended to help shape a coordinated vision for the future of State Center and its role in Baltimore’s ongoing growth and development.

“Transit-oriented development is a key priority for the Moore-Miller Administration and State Center is a prime location,” said Maryland Department of Transportation Secretary Katie Thomson. “The site has strong transit connections – including proximity to the State Center Metro Subway station, the Cultural Center Light Rail station, Baltimore Penn Station and direct connection to BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport – access to jobs and opportunity and potential for new housing and community investment. With transit at the center of this shared vision, we can help drive continued investment around Baltimore’s transit system and build a more connected region.”

"This vision plan reflects months of thoughtful analysis and demonstrates what's possible when city and state partners align around a shared goal," said Tom Sadowski, MEDCO's Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director. "State Center is poised to accelerate growth in Baltimore, and we're excited to bring this vision to life."
